There is no set national curriculum for Religious Education. Instead it is set out by the local authority.
It is statutory for religious education to be taught to key stage 3, 4, and 5 students.
Christianity is the main religion of Britain and therefore it should feature clearly in R.E lessons. RE will be enriched by other religions and perspectives on life represented in multi-ethnic Leicestershire.
At key stages 2 and 3 material from more than two religions should be incorporated. One of these religions must be Christianity and at least one other must be chosen from each of the following lists:
List One: Islam, Judaism
List Two: Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism
Key stage 4 and Post 16 – as for key stages 2 and 3, unless an examination course is being followed. In that case, teachers should follow the guidelines of the examination syllabus.
The aim of R.E nationally is to develop pupils knowledge, understanding and awareness of Christianity, (the main religion in Britain) and other religions represented in the country. This is to encourage respect of other religions in Britain and it helps promote the pupils spiritual, moral, cultural and mental development.
